MSC Zoe clearing action container troop on East Terschelling
On January 4, 2019, many volunteers came ashore to help clear the items from the containers of the ship MSC Zoe that had been thrown overboard on Terschelling. The day before, hundreds of volunteers had already helped remove the waste from the high tide line. Styrofoam and other light packaging material was blown into the dunes by the strong wind and into the natural areas behind such as the Cupidopolder and the Boschplaat. This clean-up action, coordinated by Staatsbosbeheer Terschelling, prevented a large part of nature from becoming contaminated with small plastic. It is incredible how quickly the enormous amount of rubbish from the Terschellinger beaches has been removed. However, this is not the end. It is expected that many more container items will wash up on the beach in the near future and possibly in the coming years.
