The Milieujutter Terschelling (Environmental Beachcomber)
De Milieujutter Foundation is an idealistic organization, founded by Jan Boy Bosma, former sports teacher from Amsterdam. He was annoyed by the large amount of waste washed up on the beach that was not addressed.
That is why he decided to tackle the pollution himself by setting up the De Milieujutter foundation. He discussed the problem with the municipality of Terschelling and Staatsbosbeheer to obtain an exemption for the disposal of the waste on the beach. This exemption was granted for a probationary period of six months. Jan Boy rented a tractor from his own resources and bought a suitable trailer.
The clean-up work started in February 2008. The result was so successful that a permanent waiver was granted for driving on the beach during the year. Only in the breeding season there are certain areas where cleaning cannot be done. Gradually more volunteers were added and in 2013 the board of the foundation was expanded from three to six people.
Jan Boy is still strongly involved in the foundation. He is a board member and maintains the equipment to clean the beaches.
