Storm on Terschelling October 28, 2013
On October 28, 2013, the autumn storm Christiaan rages across the north of the Netherlands. Terschelling also has to deal with heavy winds and gusts, resulting in a lot of damage to buildings and cars. Not only in villages, but also in the forests, about 500 trees die, fortunately without hitting people or material. In this case we prefer not to speak of damage: rather of opportunities for nature! Soon other trees and plants will be able to grow because of this 'natural forest thinning'. Animals are also pleased with these hiding and eating places. (And a better playground for children is not conceivable in the forest ...). Staatsbosbeheer clears the trees where they hinder walkers and other traffic. In other places the forest rangers, possibly with local residents, are still examining whether the fallen trees can remain. A small impression of this natural disaster and the consequences in the Terschellinger forests.
