MSC Zoe container cargo on the beach of Terschelling January 2019
In the night of 1 to 2 January 2019, the MSC Zoe lost 342 containers over the Wadden Islands over the German island of Borkum. The ship probably hit the ground in the shallower channel close to the islands, causing part of the container cargo to fall overboard. In the days and weeks that followed, thousands of kilos of waste washed up on the Wadden Islands and the Groningen and Frisian mainland. A lot of loose items washed up on Terschellinger. Beachcombers made their move. In the days that followed, all efforts were made to get the beaches clean.
