In 2016 it will be 350 years ago that the largest maritime disaster in the Netherlands took place. On August 19, 1666 the English Navy sailed to Vlieland and Terschelling and destroyed more than 150 Dutch merchant ships, which were waiting on the roadstead to set sail. About 2000 sailors were killed. Our national hero Michiel de Ruyter was in Zeeland at that time to argue with his captain Tromp. The next day the English Admiral Holmes ordered to burn down West-Terschelling which also happened. This "victory" of the English Navy (Holmes's bonfire) was celebrated exuberantly throughout England. In the Netherlands, on the other hand, this largest Dutch maritime disaster was quickly forgotten. The islands of Vlieland and Terschelling wanted to commemorate this fact. The 1666 - 2016 Terschelling Foundation was established on Terschelling. This foundation organized small and large events to reflect this piece of Dutch history. One of the activities is a learning project at the Terschellinger schools. This film gives a short impression of the creative lessons about the events in 1666 at the Brede School in West-Terschelling. this film is a collaborative project between Studio Brandaris Terschelling and TerschellingFilm.
