Music association Schylge plays The Forgotten Battle of 1666
On March 19, 2016, Music association Schylge performed the annual concert at ET 10 in Midsland, conducted by conductor Andries de Haan. Part of the evening was devoted to the commemoration of the biggest maritime disaster in the Netherlands near Vlieland in 1666. More than 150 merchant ships were destroyed by the English fleet with burning boats, so-called "burners". 2000 seamen were killed. The following day, the village of West-Terschelling was burned to the ground. These events have been covered up. Outside the islands, not many people know about the catastrophe. One of the pieces played on this evening, The Forgotten Battle of 1666, was specially composed by Thom Zigterman in response to these disasters. Thom Zigterman saw the story of 1666 on a large banner in the terminal of shipping company Doeken in Harlingen. He wrote the piece of music as a result. Thom submitted a piece for a composition competition in Belgium and won there. This is the second performance performed by the members of Music Association Schylge van Terschelling. Most of the images (watercolors) in the film are by artist Frans Schot. the others come from Museum 't Behouden Huys (painting). The animations are by Friso Booij.
